Self-injury Awareness Day or SIAD is celebrated on March 1 of every year. This day is also called as “Self-Harm Awareness Day“. It is a global event that is observed annually to educate people about self-injury and to encourage medical professionals, teachers, parents, and family members to recognize the symptoms of self-harm. On Self-injury Awareness Day, some people who have personal experience of self-harm will speak about it in the event to raise awareness about self-injury.

The origin and history of Self-injury Awareness Day or Self-Harm Awareness Day are not known. In the United States of America and Canada, the month of March is celebrated as Self-Injury Awareness Month. Self- harm is a disorder that can occur at any age, but most people seen with this disease are in the teenage and young adulthood. Depression is one of the main reason for self-injury. At present more than about 2 million Americans are involved in self-injury. Mostly people self-harm with acts like cutting, burning or scratching the skin, and hitting themselves and breaking bones etc. Those who engage in self-injury are mostly left alone, so experts advise that those who self-harm needs support and treatment as it may lead to suicidal behavior.
How to Celebrate Self-injury Awareness Day
On Self-injury Awareness Day, try to create awareness about self-harm to help people who feel alone and who engage in self-harm. There will be various SIAD videos available on the youtube, watch those videos and share it with others. Different organizations are supporting SIAD, try to help those organizations by donating funds or by buying SIAD wristbands. Also, share posters, an orange ribbon, and SIAD videos on social media to create awareness about the day using the hashtags #SIAD, #SelfInjuryAwarenessDay, #SelfHarmAwarenessDay.
