Pangolin Day

World Pangolin Day is celebrated on third Saturday of every February to raise awareness about the unique mammal whose population is reducing rapidly in Asia and Africa, due to hunting and deforestation. This year it is celebrated on 17th February. Pangolins are mammals that have large, protective keratin scales covering their skin, living in hollow trees or burrows, depending on the species. There are eight species ranges in size from 30 to 100 cm, in which four are listed as vulnerable; two species are listed as endangered; other two are listed as critically endangered. Pangolins are nocturnal and tend to live alone. They mostly feed on ants and termites which they capture using their long tongues. Pangolins are eaten in many parts of Africa, and local healers use the pangolin as a source of traditional medicine. It is also demanded in China and Vietnam as its meat is considered as the delicacy. Pangolins are relatively slow to reproduce, and the rate at which they are being killed for their parts is entirely unsustainable.
