It is observed on the last Saturday of every January. The first official Washington Gardener Magazine Seed Exchange was held in Washington DC on 26th January 2006. Kathy Jentz who was the editor cum publisher of the magazine has established this Day. On gaining popularity, the Day has become a nationwide celebration. Seeds were considered to be one of the first commodities that are valued and traded. Seed Swap is an event where the gardeners of different parts of the country meet to exchange seeds.
